Dry skin and itching

Aging reduces the capacity of the skin to moisturize itself, so the skin becomes dry. Older people often complain dry skin and itching mainly on lower legs, elbows, and forearms. From itchy legs and gradually spread to the thighs, and even the whole body. Scratching can cause excoriations, which then may progress to secondary eczema or may become infected. The itch-scratch cycle makes the elderly often feel distressed and discomfort on the rough and scaly skin.   


Itchy skin may occur in small areas, such as on an arm or leg, even your whole body. Itchy skin appears without any other noticeable skin changes on. It may be associated with:

  • Redness
  • Bumps, spots or blisters
  • Dry, cracked skin
  • Leathery or scaly texture to the skin

  • Aging
  • Overuse of soaps, antiperspirants, perfumes
  • Hot baths
  • Dehydration
  • Sun exposure
  • Smoking
  • Stress
  • Receiving cholesterol-reducing drugs

  • Increase intake of food or supplement that are rich in vitamins A and E, antioxidants, beta-carotene, Sulfur, and Zinc
  • Avoid food that contain saturated fat – fried foods, animal fats and heat-processed vegetable oils
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day
  • Always maintain a healthy diet with lots of vegetables, fruits, grains, and nuts that can satisfy your daily protein, carbohydrate and fat requirement.
  •  Avoid alcohol, spicy food, caffein, soft drinks, sugar, chocolate, potato chips, and junk foods
 
  • Keep baths or showers short, and take baths or showers less often.
  • Use warm (not hot) water.
  • Dry your skin thoroughly but gently -- pat, DON'T rub.
  • Applying a moisturizer right after drying off from a shower or washing your hands
  • Try to avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Always wear sunscreen with at least 30 SPF
  • Wear a hat with a brim and other protective clothing
