Liver Cancer

The liver is the largest organ in the body. It has many important functions that keep a person healthy. It removes harmful materials from the blood.  It also makes enzymes and bile that help us digest food, and converts food into substances needed for life and growth. Liver cancer results from the abnormal growth of the cells of the liver. It can be a primary cancer (starts in the liver) or secondary cancer (originates and spreads from another body organ to the liver).Liver cancer survival rates are low because the disease is diagnosed late most often and death usually occurs within a few months of diagnosis.

Liver cancer usually has no symptoms in the early stages. Symptoms are the same for both primary and secondary liver cancer. In its later stages, liver cancer can cause:

  • Pain in the upper right side of the abdomen (there are no nerves through the liver – this means pain is not felt in the liver but rather around the area due to distension, irritation or inflammation of the liver)
  • Fever
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Nausea
  • Weakness
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swelling of the abdomen.

Liver cancer is often caused by damage to the liver due to:

  • Cirrhosis (scarring of the liver tissue from alcohol)
  • Hepatitis B or C or D
  • Some chemicals that are now rarely used.
