Tension headache

Tension headaches are the most common type of headaches among adults. Tension headaches are usually associated with emotional upsets or stress, which can occur at home or at work. They may be aggravated by abrupt changes in environment or life style.


  • Mild to moderate pain or pressure affecting the front, top or sides of the head
  • Headache occurring later in the day
  • Difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Disturbed concentration
  • Mild sensitivity to light or noise
  • General muscle aching

  • Social pressure
  • Family difficulty
  • Unemployment
  • Insufficient rest
  • High work related pressure
  • Overweight
  • Adaptation to the new environment
  • Poor posture
  • Emotional or mental stress, including depression
  • Overexertion
  • Pregnancy
  • Perfectionism

  • Consume adequate water
  • Avoid excessive amounts of tea, coffee or cola beverages
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages
  • Foods rich in calcium and magnesium 
 
  • Avoid those who sap your energy and motivation. If you can't avoid them, or don't want to, learn how not to lett them get you down.
  • Start saying positive things especially about yourself.
  • Practice good posture.
  • Take a 20 minute nap if you’re prone to tension headaches. If you'd rather not sleep, try 20 minutes of meditation instead
  • Talk to a good friend or keep a diary to express your feelings.
