Stress in Women

Researches reveal headache are more likely caused by tiny everyday irritations than major upheavals such as marriage, divorce or job loss. The proportion of women suffered from anxiety and tension headache are significantly higher than men, where women are three times more likely to experience depression.

Studies show that people who are more prone to the effects of stress as well as anxiety and depression are more frequently suffering from frequent headaches. Anxiety can worsen tension headaches by:

  • Increasing muscle tension
  • Flooding the body with stress chemicals, such as adrenaline
  • Reducing the amount of ‘relaxation’ chemicals in the body, such as endorphins
  • Reducing emotional tolerance to stressors and strains
  • Reducing the pain threshold
  • Counteracting the effects of pain-killing medication.

Some of the stressful life events that may result in depression in women include:

  • Financial pressure
  • Parenthood - women still tend to be the primary caregivers at home over the years and parenting is a heavy duty requires 24 hours attention.
  • ‘Role-juggling’ – A new world trend that require women to fulfilled not only the mother role in the family, so as the father role, which means women are facing various and often competing challenges from work and family.
  • Marital and interpersonal problems.

  • Eat more green, yellow, and orange vegetables and fruits
  • Taking natural vitamins like B complex, C and E along with minerals like manganese, selenium and zinc
  • Avoid junk foods, fast food, fatty and oily foods, and food high in sugar and salt
  • Avoid drinking tea, coffee and cocoa

  • Try to set aside at least 30 minutes each day to switch off from the world and unwind.
  • Laugh more and take breaks from work
  • Get enough sleep, 8-10 hours per day
  • Exercise regularly
  • Find self-help books at your local library or bookstore.
  • Learn and practice relaxation techniques like guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation, yoga, tai chi, or meditation
