Hearing loss

Hearing is one of the most important sense which ties to our overall health but often one of with consume our less care. Yet, hearing loss can impair communication and socially isolate affected elderly from their family members and friends. Not only it causes reduction of functional health, but also leads to depression, dissatisfaction with life, and withdrawal from social activities. However, early treatment and prevention can lessen or prevent these problems and make a big difference to life.


  • Have trouble hearing over the telephone
  • Find it hard to follow conversations when two or more people are talking
  • Often ask people to repeat what they are saying
  • Need to turn up the TV volume so loud that others complain
  • Think that others seem to mumble

There are two main types of hearing loss
'Conductive' hearing loss is caused by obstructions or malfunctions in the outer or middle ear. It can be caused by:

  • Middle ear infections and malfunctions
  • A damaged ear drum
  • Impacted ear wax.

'Sensori neural' hearing loss is caused by damage to the hair cells in the inner ear. It can be caused by:

  • Exposure to loud noise
  • Disease, such as Meningitis
  • Ageing.

  • Intake more food or supplements rich in vitamin C, E and antioxidants

 
  • If you work in noisy places or commute to work in noisy traffic or construction, choose quiet leisure activities instead of noisy ones.
  • Try not to use several noisy machines at the same time.
  • Eliminate or lower unnecessary noises around you.
  • Utilize sound amplifying devices on phones.
  • Use personal listening systems to reduce background noise.
  • Try to keep television sets, stereos and headsets low in volume.
  • Wear earplugs or earmuffs to protect your hearing from loud noise.
