Osteoarthritis

Age-related arthritis, called osteoarthritis occurs when the tissue that cushions the ends of the bones within joints wears away. Early in the disease, your joints may ache after physical work or exercise. Later on, joint pain may become more persistent. For some group of people, it may progress quickly and interfer greatly with day-to-day life and cause significant pain and disability. In long term, it defers the elderly to participate in everyday personal and family joys and responsibilities which seriously undermines their quality of life such as feeling helpless, depressed, and anxious.

The symptoms of osteoarthritis can vary from one person to the next. Some of the more common symptoms include:

  • Stiffness
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle weakness

The cause of osteoarthritis is unclear – however, risk factors for its development have been identified. These include:

  • Family history of osteoarthritis
  • A previous injury or overuse of the joint
  • Being overweight.
